5. Uniform Thickness
Having the different pieces at a uniform thickness will be essential, which is why you’ll likely need a thickness planer to complete this DIY project.
6. A Straight Edge
Since you’ll be aligning the pieces of the wood pallet along a wall, you’ll need to ensure that at least one side of each piece provides a straight edge.
7. 9-Inch Cut
From there, you’ll also want the pieces to be a uniform length. Though you can vary, this instructor recommends a 9-inch length.

Once you’ve done the above and smooth out the pieces with a belt sander, you should end up with a pile of wood like this.
