Sure, when you think of chalkboards you think of classrooms, but the reality is a chalkboard – whether you write on it or not – is a fantastic addition to the home even if it is only used as a decorative piece.
The good news is any DIYer can create a chalkboard of their own – it’s quite easy, especially if you follow the steps shown on Making Our Nest.
You don’t need much in the way of supplies or time, so just jump in and enjoy the process.
1. Break Up the Clutter
Because a chalkboard is a blank surface, it’s a fantastic way to break up clutter. In fact, having a blank chalkboard allows your room to not look so busy but instead add relief to your walls in a creative way.
2. Chalkboard Paint
Understand that this is a bit counterintuitive – paint that creates a chalkboard. But it works really well. This paint is simple to apply and will do the job covering your DIY chalkboard and allowing you to write on it with ease.
3. Get a Flat Board
A light, flat birch board is perfect for this particular job. The best part is the board has decent durability and it will take well to your frame. The old chalkboards were much heavier and difficult to use, unlike this one.
4. Frame Out the Chalkboard
Remember – measure twice, cut once. Use the boards to give your chalkboard the right frame. Then mark the planks and give a good cut. Make sure the cut is nice and even so the end of the planks don’t fray.
5. Glue Planks
Once you have successfully cut your planks, be sure to glue them onto the chalkboard. The critical component here is clamping the planks to the board so the glue sets correctly.
