There can be little doubt that the living room is one of the most – if not the most – important spaces in your home. It’s a place where you gather with family and friends, and it’s a place where you shed off the stress of every working day. That’s why it’s so important that you have a living room that looks the part. It needs to be a space that’s at once comfortable and pleasing to the eye.
Of course, this is much easier said than done. Just ask any interior designer! However, if you know what goes into making a beautiful living room – and what makes a living room much less than it can be – then you’ve already fought half the battle. That’s why we’ve collected these 14 pictures. In them, you’re going to see seven living rooms before and after stunning renovations. In the end, you’re going to see what’s possible, and maybe find the spark you need to give your own home’s living room the facelift it needs.
1. BEFORE: The Bare Essentials
All the essentials one needs in the modern living room are here; it’s just that they’re not very much to look at, and thus this space is totally uninviting.
2. AFTER: The Bold Colors
An incredible infusion of color in this space creates warmth that’s essential to a comfortable and inviting living room. Note how those chairs are the same, but with new cushions to fit the new design aesthetic.
3. BEFORE: From Another Era
It might be hard to imagine, but there was once an era where a living room like this would have been desirable.
4. AFTER: Into the New Era
Thankfully, those days are behind us now. Replacing the drab carpet, we have beautiful hardwood floors. The dark paint colors have been transferred to bright colors… But that fireplace has stayed just the way it was… And that’s perfect!
5. BEFORE: It’s a Living Room…
Some people don’t fully appreciate the benefits of a beautiful living room. Take this homeowner, for example, who was using his living room as a home office.
6. AFTER: Interior Design!
Thank God that someone told him this was unacceptable. Gone is the drab “home office” of before, and in is a sleek and modern look that exudes luxury and refinement.
7. BEFORE: Unexpected Spaces
If you’re short on living space in your home, perhaps you might need to convert another space into a living room. Something like your garage, say.
8. AFTER: Holy Cow!
Maybe you thought that was crazy talk. But just check out the delicious Mid-Century styling of this gorgeous living room that was built inside of the bones of a disused garage… Incredible!
9. BEFORE: Last-Century Mid-Century
There’s no denying the Mid-Century styling of this blank living room space. But, its ‘institutional’ elements haven’t aged particularly well. An update is needed!
10. AFTER: Roll Out the Bar Cart!
And an update is just what this living room received! The wall between the living room and kitchen was knocked down for an open concept, the brick received a fresh coat of paint, and the space instantly feels contemporary chic.
11. BEFORE: Dated… Too Dated!
There’s definitely a beautiful living room hidden somewhere in the bones of this space, but teasing it out isn’t going to be easy…
12. AFTER: Subtle Touches, Big Results
By framing in the fireplace and closing in that built-in, things are off to a good start. But it’s the dark blue paint color that plays off of the dark hardwood floor that really seals the deal.
13. BEFORE: It’s A Start, At Least
The hardwood floor in this living room space is actually quite nice… It’s just too bad that it’s drowned out by the dreadful green used on the wood-panel walls.
14. AFTER: Bright and Airy
A fresh coat of paint on the walls and some bright color choices with the furniture and décor complete transforms this living room, yielding something bright and airy.
